RADON TESTING

WHY TEST FOR RADON?

Radon is a radioactive gas that can get trapped inside buildings, at various concentration levels. Studies have proven that exposure to radon gas can lead to lung cancer.  The EPA urges all homeowners to regularly test their homes to determine radon gas levels.

TYPES OF RADON TESTS

There are two types of radon tests use for residential testing.  An “Active” radon test is usually performed by trained and licensed radon measurement professionals. A “Passive” test also called a self-test which is typically conducted by a homeowner.

PROFESSIONAL RADON TESTING

A state licensed professional radon measurement technician will assess the property layout then install a Continuous Radon Monitor which is an active test device  that will precisely test radon gas levels during the test period.

This test must be conducted during “closed building” conditions in order to accurately capture radon levels. The continuous radon monitor equipment can yield precise results in as little as 48 hours

PASSIVE RADON TESTS

Passive radon test kits are used to periodically test for radon gas concentrations. Passive test kits must be in place for several days,  then must be packaged and mailed to a laboratory for results, which can take up to 10 days or more. And depending on the configuration of the home (existence of crawl space, basements, sub-basements, etc.), multiple test kits may be required.Passive tests are less reliable compared to active testing for a variety of reasons including improper placement, movement, household activity (windows and doors opening and closing, etc.) among other factors that may render inaccurate radon gas measurement.

If time is of the essences, a professional test is the best option and offers the most accurate results.
